The °ÄÃÅ¿ª½±¼Ç¼ City Schools music department is an active member of the Ulster County Music Educators Association (UCMEA), New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) and the Music Educators National Conference (MENC).

Whether a student has a love of singing or playing an instrument, from the violin to the tuba, the opportunity is there in the °ÄÃÅ¿ª½±¼Ç¼ City Schools music program. Our comprehensive music program is open to students of all skill levels.

Students can perform with award-winning ensembles. Our performing groups received nine gold medals, five silver medals and one bronze at NYSSMA Major Organization Festivals. Over five hundred of our students received honor ratings at the NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival. Each year we have students selected to the All-State, Area All-State and All-County Festivals.

The °ÄÃÅ¿ª½±¼Ç¼ High School vocal performing groups include Choir, Mixed Chorus and Chorale. Instrumental students can perform in Orchestra, Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Marching Band. There are also two jazz bands and seasonal instrumental and vocal groups. These groups have performed at musical competitions, local community performances and such places as Disney World, Montreal and Washington, D.C. High school musicians can also take classes in electronic keyboard, voice, beginning theory and Advanced Placement theory.

Our middle school musicians have many opportunities to exercise their musical skills. They can perform in concert and jazz bands, marching bands, orchestras and choruses. The music students take part in many interesting field trips and community performances. Middle school general music classes build on the foundation of the elementary program.

All students in kindergarten up to 8th grade take part in classroom musical instruction. Instrumental lessons are available beginning in 4th grade, with small group lessons as well as small and large performing ensembles. 4th grade students may also sing in chorus.

These musical opportunities are designed for a lifetime of musical involvement.
